Matthew G. Ahrens has spent over 30 years in property tax, currently representing owners of various property types throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Prior to joining Grossberg, Yochelson, Fox & Beyda, LLP in 2021, Mr. Ahrens previously served for 19 years as Vice President, Property Tax for Host Hotels & Resorts, the largest lodging real estate investment trust (REIT) and one of the largest owners of luxury and upper-upscale hotels. He was responsible for all property tax related activities at Host, managing both internal staff and external consultants and lawyers in all compliance and appeal efforts throughout the portfolio. Prior to joining Host, Mr. Ahrens spent nine years with a property tax law firm in Washington, D.C..
Mr. Ahrens has spoken at numerous conferences and seminars for organizations such as the Council on State Taxation (COST) and Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), as well many other professional industry organizations. Mr. Ahrens received a B.A. in History from Rice University in Houston, Texas, and a law degree from the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. where he was a member of the Journal of International Law and Economics.
